Former chairman of the local Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee Prem Kaushal will take on the BJP’s Anil Dhiman in the Bhoranj by poll.
The nod for his candidature was given by AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi. The HPCC had forwarded a panel of five names to the AICC for consideration. The BJP has announced the candidature of Anil Dhiman, son of former minister ID Dhiman, who represented the segment for over 27 years. The reserved constituency of Bhoranj fell vacant following the death of ID Dhiman on November 15, 2016.
Kaushal was being considered as the front-runner in the race for the Congress ticket owing to his close proximity to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.
A social worker, Kaushal has been associated with student politics and has remained president of the NSUI and president of the college SCA in 1984 while he was studying in Government Degree College here.
He has also remained the state vice-president of the Youth Congress and was Block Congress president of Mewa (now Bhoranj). Hailing from a humble background, Kaushal contested the Vidhan Sabha elections in 1998 and lost by a margin of 5,400 votes while in 2007 he unsuccessfully contested as an independent, securing 7,000 votes.
Confident of victory, Kaushal said, “Development in the Bhoranj segment has taken place due to the balanced development programs initiated by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and the Congress.
