To curb the taxi operators who charging extra money from commuters, the district administration of Lahaul Spiti has fixed the taxi fare as internal road links of the district have been opened for light vehicle traffic.
Every year the internal road links of the district are blocked due to heavy snowfall. Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the PWD undertake the difficult task and restore these roads.
Now, a few internal roads links — Keyong to Darcha, Keyong to Sissu and Keyong to Udaipur — have been thrown open for light vehicular movement and the district administration has allowed taxi operators to provide transport facility for the comfort of commuters.
Devi Shuran said due to unavailability of Himachal Road Transportation Corporation (HRTC) bus service, taxi operators charge extra money from us to reach any destination. Many times I have argued with them but nothing was done so far as if they are not afraid of anyone.
During winters, HRTC stops its bus service within the district and resumes it in summers, when the snow melts and roads become suitable for driving, he added.
Vivek Bhatia, Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul Spiti, had issued an order for taxi operators to charge a specific amount of money for the service as fixed by district administration according to the distance covered.
